Playing Princess Margaret in Netflix’s breakout royal drama The Crown is a dream role for Vanessa Kirby, who gets to shine as the palace wild child. As season two kicks off, we find Margaret and Elizabeth at odds over the Queen’s refusal to let Margaret be with the love of her life Peter Townsend. We dig deep with Kirby on the art of portraying simmering rage and her new love interest.

You had some really tense moments with Elizabeth (Claire Foy) at the end of the first season where there’s just…
The boiling rage underneath.

Full-on boiling rage. Were you waiting for a love interest to come along and take your focus off that anger?
Yeah, completely. And I think the interesting thing is they never have a huge massive blow-up, do they? I remember Peter always saying that in the first season, you know, part of the difficulty with the family is that people don’t talk about their feelings and they don’t – so it’s quite hard to heal from that. How do you heal that sister relationship in our story anyway?

I love the way you and Elizabeth fight with your eyes. You just glare at each other.
We just glare at each other and don’t say what we really think. You know, Margaret tries as much, you know she’s pretty good at not having a filter but the Queen just wants to brush everything under the carpet and not look at it. I think it’s really, the tension underneath I think is something. I definitely had a desire for them to make it up, but I don’t think it’s possible after that scene at the end of last season…

The second season of The Crown felt like a more emotional journey than the first, delving into the painful marital conflict between Elizabeth and Philip against the backdrop of a fragile post-war Britain still struggling to find its place on the world stage. Though the British stiff upper lip is still present and correct—the queen’s icily polite putdowns become a devastating art form this season—everybody’s heart was a little closer to their sleeve this year.

But Vanessa Kirby’s impulsive and passionate Princess Margaret has always been the show’s heart. She’s beloved by viewers in large part because she’s so unguarded and spikily candid. In the wake of her sister forcing her to break off her engagement last season, Margaret is devastated, throwing herself headlong into an all-consuming affair with Matthew Goode’s roguish Antony Armstrong-Jones. The pair are married before the season is out, and although that marriage lasted more than a decade, let’s just say it was not smooth sailing.

Kirby spoke to BAZAAR.com about Margaret’s “dark nights of the soul,” how The Crown changed her opinion about the royal family, and her emotional final day on set.

Do the creators of Netflix’s The Crown have psychic capabilities? It’s a theory that doesn’t seem too far off—especially since the royal-centric show is returning hot off the heels of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement. While we’ll likely have to wait a few more years before that relationship plays out on-screen, there will be another, equally fascinating duo popping up on the show: Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones.

On a Sunday morning in Los Angeles, British actress Vanessa Kirby, her blanched hair swept up into a clean chignon, recalls a rare photo of Princess Margaret, the infamously fabulous figure she portrays on Netflix’s The Crown. “Margaret’s on the beach—maybe on her honeymoon in the ’60s [with] Tony Armstrong-Jones [who] has taken this picture of her,” she says of the portrait given to her by a friend. “She looks really wild and free, the light is reflected in her eye as she’s looking up, and her hair’s all messy. That’s the Margaret I love.”
