Wild and newly single, Julie throws a late night party. In the kitchen, Jean and Kristen clean up as the celebration heaves above them. Crossing the threshold, Julie initiates a power game with Jean. It descends into a savage fight for survival. Fuelled by social division, Strindberg’s masterpiece remains shocking and fiercely relevant in this new version by Polly Stenham (That Face, Neon Demon). Carrie Cracknell (The Deep Blue Sea) directs a cast including Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) and Eric Kofi Abrefa (The Amen Corner).

James Norton, star of “War and Peace” and “McMafia,” and Vanessa Kirby, who portrayed Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of “The Crown,” will play intrepid journalists in Agnieszka Holland’s politically charged new film “Gareth Jones.” WestEnd Films is handling international sales.

Norton is being talked about as a potential next James Bond off the back of his star turns in the BBC’s “McMafia” and “War and Peace.” In “Gareth Jones,” which is set in the early 1930s, he plays an ambitious Welsh journalist who travels to Moscow to attempt to interview dictator Joseph Stalin. The film is based on real events.

In Russia, Jones meets New York Times reporter Ada Brooks, played by Kirby, who is soon to be seen in “Mission: Impossible 6 — Fallout.” Brooks clues Jones in to Russian government oppression and, after a clandestine trip to Ukraine, he writes about it, but then has to fight for the truth in the face of propaganda, denials and cover-ups. As he tries to tell the story, he meets a young George Orwell and shares his findings, in turn influencing the author’s classic novel “Animal Farm.”

“The script joins, in a very artistic and original way, a few issues from the 20th century which seem particularly valid today,” Holland said. “George Orwell’s famous novel, ‘Animal Farm,’ links everything together: It reveals the mechanisms of totalitarian falsehood, and the terror that can be fought only by resistance to deception and violence.”

For Norton, it is another project with Russian connections after he played a British-educated banker from a Russian crime family in “McMafia.” “Gareth Jones” will shoot in Poland, Ukraine and Britain, with principal photography to begin Feb. 26. WestEnd will begin worldwide sales at the European Film Market, and is co-repping the film in the U.S. with Endeavor Content.

Holland was Oscar-nominated for “Europa, Europa,” which dealt with Nazi Germany. She said that “Gareth Jones” has themes that remain relevant: “Nobody wanted to shed light on Stalin’s atrocities, which Gareth exposed. Today, we don’t lack corruptible conformists and egoists; we lack Orwells and Joneses. That is why we should bring them back to life.”

The film is produced by Andrea Serdaru-Barbul, who also wrote the script, alongside Polish filmmaker Klaudia Smieja, Stanislaw Dziedzic of Film Produkcja, Angus Lamont of Crab Apple Films, and Ukrainian producer Egor Olesov of Kinorob. It was supported by the Polish Film Institute and the Ukrainian State Film Agency.

USA users can soon see The Frankenstein Chronicles on Netflix! For now, no news on if it will arrive Wordwide someday but, good news is, Vanessa is also featured on S2! Here is a sneak peak:

Netflix will take Sean Bean’s cult hit “The Frankenstein Chronicles” to the U.S. and further afield after striking a deal for the U.K.-produced drama series, Variety has learned. The streaming service has taken both six-episode seasons and is expected to run the series as a Netflix Original in the U.S.

The Frankenstein Chronicles” is a re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. Set in 1830s London, Bean (“Game of Thrones”) plays John Marlott, a war veteran and river policeman. Season 1 of the serialized show sees him investigating the case of a corpse made up of body parts from different children, and finding the matter involves senior establishment figures and demonic forces.

The show has been on ITV’s Encore channel in the U.K. but the British broadcaster is closing the linear service and “The Frankenstein Chronicles” will then be one of several series available as a box-set on its catchup service. The show has been well-reviewed, but the ITV Encore pay-TV channel only attracts a modest audience in the U.K. The series is produced by U.K.-based Rainmark Films, and Frank Doelger (“Game of Thrones”) is an executive producer.

Netflix has stepped up and inked a global deal for “The Frankenstein Chronicles,” but the international situation is complicated by the fact that the show’s distributor, Endemol Shine International, has already licensed the series in multiple territories. Where that is the case, Netflix will still have it, but in a later window.

ITV said last month it was shuttering the Encore linear channel and making it a digital-only offering from the spring. “The Frankenstein Chronicles” had been one of its big original commissions for the service, alongside “Harlots” and “Houdini & Doyle.” “Harlots” was picked up by Hulu in the U.S. and it produces the latest season.

“The Frankenstein Chronicles” deal opens the way for Netflix to make further seasons should it resonate with its U.S. and global subscribers. The streaming service also has the second season of “Medici,” which will feature Bean.
