The second season of The Crown felt like a more emotional journey than the first, delving into the painful marital conflict between Elizabeth and Philip against the backdrop of a fragile post-war Britain still struggling to find its place on the world stage. Though the British stiff upper lip is still present and correct—the queen’s icily polite putdowns become a devastating art form this season—everybody’s heart was a little closer to their sleeve this year.

But Vanessa Kirby’s impulsive and passionate Princess Margaret has always been the show’s heart. She’s beloved by viewers in large part because she’s so unguarded and spikily candid. In the wake of her sister forcing her to break off her engagement last season, Margaret is devastated, throwing herself headlong into an all-consuming affair with Matthew Goode’s roguish Antony Armstrong-Jones. The pair are married before the season is out, and although that marriage lasted more than a decade, let’s just say it was not smooth sailing.

Kirby spoke to BAZAAR.com about Margaret’s “dark nights of the soul,” how The Crown changed her opinion about the royal family, and her emotional final day on set.

Do the creators of Netflix’s The Crown have psychic capabilities? It’s a theory that doesn’t seem too far off—especially since the royal-centric show is returning hot off the heels of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement. While we’ll likely have to wait a few more years before that relationship plays out on-screen, there will be another, equally fascinating duo popping up on the show: Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones.

On a Sunday morning in Los Angeles, British actress Vanessa Kirby, her blanched hair swept up into a clean chignon, recalls a rare photo of Princess Margaret, the infamously fabulous figure she portrays on Netflix’s The Crown. “Margaret’s on the beach—maybe on her honeymoon in the ’60s [with] Tony Armstrong-Jones [who] has taken this picture of her,” she says of the portrait given to her by a friend. “She looks really wild and free, the light is reflected in her eye as she’s looking up, and her hair’s all messy. That’s the Margaret I love.”

Photoshoots > 2017 > Set 010 for Vanity Fair ‘The Crown’ Special

When The Crown’s second season debuts on December 8, Princess Margaret (played by Vanessa Kirby) will be nursing the epic heartbreak of her broken engagement, to Captain Peter Townsend, through clouds of chain smoke and nasty hangovers. Soon enough, though, the self-destructive royal will meet a character who electrifies her palace-bound life: photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, played by Matthew Goode.

In character portraits shared exclusively with Vanity Fair for a 24-hour window, Kirby and Goode channel the late princess and photographer, whose chemistry is instantaneous in the series, much as it was in real life.

Though Margaret and Antony had much in common—including resentment for authority and rebellious streaks—their outsized egos would eventually cause the relationship to implode.

Earlier this year, The Crown creator Peter Morgan told Vanity Fair that Margaret would not only find a rebound romance in the drama’s second season.

“She finds love and pain. I promise you, it’s properly painful,” Morgan said. “Properly painful.”

Though the ill-fated romance makes for more broken hearts, Morgan promised that viewers will be pleased by the second-season dramatics and acting.

“Vanessa explodes this season,” Morgan teased. “We always knew she was a great actress, but she explodes. It’s a very identifiable tragedy, to have someone in the family with more apparent charisma and yet no use for it . . . I love writing her.”

Vanessa Kirby, who plays Princess Margaret in the hit Netflix drama The Crown, has spoken out for the first time to quash ‘ludicrous’ persistent rumours that she and Tom Cruise are engaged to marry.

‘There’s literally zero truth in it,’ the actress said of the suggestion, which first arose when she began filming Mission: Impossible 6 opposite Cruise.

‘I’ve been in a relationship for two years! The rumours came out after I’d met Tom, once, in a roomful of people. We hadn’t started filming, and all of a sudden we’re getting married! It’s so bizarre. My boyfriend found it hilarious.’
